Flock Theory #31
Someone from the village was walking their duck on a lead, another day there were 800kg bulls running past the front door attempting to maim my neighbours
A thought:
We welcomed our second daughter into the world three weeks ago, her timing was impeccable. I stacked the week heavy with meetings, deliberately keeping the following week fairly light, so I was relieved when Friday night finally rolled around with optimism of some rest and a mental reset. I managed to drift off at 10pm, only to be woken around midnight with the news we probably ought to depart for hospital. Friday was a bank holiday, the Asunción de la Virgen, which meant that most of Spain was having a street party. For some important context, we live right on the middle of a high street in a very typical Spanish village, which means the festivities take place immediately outside our house. Two recent events stick in the mind; the day I arrived having driven down from London, someone from the village was walking their duck on a lead, another day there were 800kg bulls running past the front door attempting to maim my neighbours. Parking was a nightmare. What the village events have in common is everyone turns out, they take place really late at night and they always involve fireworks; the night we left for the hospital was no different. Opening our garage at 1am, Rocio deep in labour, to north of 300 people, a brass band complete with lead singer and fireworks, and the police enquiring what the fuck we were doing trying to carefully drive through the crowd, will live long in the memory. Unfortunately, as will Rocio having very serious complications after birth and us spending 10 days in hospital. The hospital cafeteria was not where I expected to be conducting LP calls for the first closing, however I managed to take one positive from what was a highly traumatic experience; a useful perspective reset. For all the pressure I heap on myself to get this done, none of it actually matters, all that matters was we could get home in reasonable health and begin life as a young family of four.
